The Plan For Gospel Music Heritage Celebration Are Underway

Plans are currently underway for the Annual Gospel Music Heritage Celebration. Through the efforts of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and her committee are planning yet another celebration in and around the United States.

Currently there are various scheduled dates around the country to nationally celebrate "The Evolution of Gospel Music". Stay tuned for postings and updates. We would love for you to come and be apart of this great event. We will be needing voices and the involvement of the pastors and their church congregation as well. September is Gospel Music Heritage Month!
A bit of background… the country has been celebrating Gospel Music Heritage Month since 2008, after Congress passed legislation acknowledging September as the month to honor gospel music. The initiative was spearheaded by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) and the National Recording Academy for Arts & SciencesGospel Music Channel (now known as gmc) and the Gospel Music Association.
But did you even know it was Heritage Month? Do you support or celebrate it?
I bet you’re not among the 864 people who “like” its official Facebook fan page, nor are you among the 37 people who follow its official Twitter profile (don’t feel bad, I just learned of it as I wrote this). And I know you don’t visit the GospelMusicHeritage.com website, which now simply redirects to the homepage of gmc, the organization that hosted the web address as the movement grew.
Ok, it’s not completely as desolate as I’m making it seem.
At the top of this month, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts hosted its 3rd annual “Evolution of Gospel” celebration in honor of Heritage Month. With a “Kennedy Center Honors…” type of vibe, the night honored the contributions of Dr. Bobby JonesCathy Hughes and First Lady Michelle Obama, who was unable to attend. The evening featured performances by Kirk FranklinRichard SmallwoodMarvin Sapp and more.

And Heritage Month’s social media properties are hinting at some OFFICIAL event taking place in Houston, TX this month, though they haven’t announced a date or location.
My thought is that, because the gospel music community does not have an official, unified trade organization representing it, there is no group charged with really celebrating anything in it, including Heritage Month. Plenty of organizations– from SAGMA to GMWAGMA to BMI, NARASto various acronyms in between– have done their part to honor the music and culture, but these groups are often overworked and understaffed, with other primary corporate objectives. Their celebrations are splintered across the country and across the calendar year. Who can plan a month’s worth of unified gospel music activities?!
But my observations do raise the question– we don’t really celebrate Gospel Music Heritage Month, do we?
If you agree, fine. If you disagree, tell me where the party is and let’s have at it.
Either way, I think we all need to do a bit more.
Come Help Us To Celebrate In Your City and State Gospel Music Heritage Month

H.Con.Res. 370 (110th): Expressing support for designation of September 2008 as “Gospel Music Heritage Month” and honoring gospel music for ...

...its valuable and longstanding contributions to the culture of the United States.
110th Congress, 2007–2009. Text as of Jun 27, 2008 (Referred to Senate Committee).

Rev. Herbert Stroman (1930 - 2013)

We sincerely extend to the Stroman Family our condolensces during the loss of a great man who we paid tribute to in February.

No words can console or ease the pain of losing a loved one to the grip of death. But God knows the sorrow of loss but also the encouragement of gain; knowing that Pastor Herbert Stroman has gained eternal rest from the suffering and pain during his illness.

Pastor Stroman is orginally from Brazoria, Texas. He is a true man of God, with many attributes. Pastor Stroman is an exceptional preacher, teacher, counselor, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, who is always willing to help and ready to serve..
He served in the United States Armed Forces, after fifteen months in the service he was promoted to staff sergeant. This experience began his incomparable career in leadership. Rev. Stroman attended Union Theological Seminary, in Houston, Texas as also attended theological school at Bishop College in Dallas, Texas.
Pastor Stroman is a man called by God to preach the Gospel of Christ. In 1957, Rev. Stroman was called to Christian Hope Baptist Church, in the Third Ward section of Houston, Texas. He accepted the task on the 7th of January, at that time was a second Sunday.
In January 2011, Rev. Herbert Stroman has served as the pastor of Christian Hope Baptist Church for 54 years. God's grace has allowed Pastor Stroman to license thirty-eight (38) ministers ("Sons in the Ministry"). Pastor Stroman has said so many times that he prayed to the Lord for a church in Third Ward, and the rest is history.
Pastor Stroman once served as Vice President in the Ministers Conference of the Independent Missionary Baptist General Association. He has also served on the Board of Finance for the National Baptist Convention of America.

Under the guidance of God and the leadership of Rev. J. Blair, the Christian Hope Baptist Church was organized at 3347 Anita Street in the Third Ward Section of Houston, Texas. Upon the demise of Rev. J. Blair, pastoral leadership continued with Rev. L. C. Hearn, Rev. C. L. Johnson and Rev. Jimmy Johnson. Charter members included Deacon I. D. Burton, Deacon Ed Simmons, Sis. Dorothy George, and Sis. Laura L. Johnson.
In January 1957, Rev. Herbert Stroman was called to Christian Hope Baptist Church. On January 7, 1957 the second Sunday, he accepted the task. The late Deacon I. D. Burton was very instrumental in seeking this Shepherd to lead the Christian Hope Baptist Church flock.

A new site and second building were acquired through the goodness of God. On February 5, 1967, the Christian Hope Baptist Church relocated to its present location at 3418 Anita Street.
The spiritual leadership of Pastor Herbert Stroman caused the membership to grow and there was a need to expand. The building project began, was completed and the congregation entered the new sanctuary on May 30, 1976. Through God’s will and the untiring faith, spiritual and motivational leadership of our pastor, the congregation continued to grow and the people had a mind to work.
As time evolved, the Trustee Board was re-established in 1983. Plans to remodel the sanctuary were in place and the project began. The remodeled sanctuary was completed and the new edifice was dedicated on September 30, 1984. The Lord moved us from “Vision to Victory” and blessed us to burn our church mortgage on December 8, 1998.

In 2001, Pastor Stroman had a vision to enhance the front of our church and upgrade the inside. The church family supported the vision and the building renovation project began in January 2002. The renovation project was completed in January 2005 and the cornerstone was laid January 30, 2005. Currently, there have been thirty-eight ministers licensed under the leadership of Pastor Stroman. There are currently twenty-two stewards serving on the Board of Deacons and thirteen stewards serving on the Board of Trustees. The church membership has continued to grow from a record low of sixteen members. Pastor Stroman is empowered by God to bring the CHBC congregation from where they were to where they should be…. As we grow in grace, we grow in Christian love.

The Texas Gospel Music Excellence Awards 2013

Catching You Guys Up!!!!

Greetings my readers and Facebook family,

I know I haven't been in touch with you for some time. Due to losses of family and friends, I had to--had to readapt to my purpose and refocus. God is still good and his mercies are everlasting, leaving us with the faith and hope to go on... there is too much work in the vineyard to loose the harvest.

Here are some things that have gone on to let you know that the mission of God is still alive and well...

In October 2012, The Gospel Music Workshop of America's Gospel Announcer's Guild of Houston initiated and event, in hopes will be a yearly event...."Dinner On The Water"...a dinner cruise that was a huge success... Congratulations to Sis. Catherine Dorsey on a job well done.
In November 2012 , The Gospel Announcer's Guild of Texas celebrated their anniversary during the Thanksgiving Holiday in Dallas, Texas.
Houston's Own Loretta Williams Gurnell  & KTSU's Charles Hudson served as a panelist in the artistry segment sharing the aspects and their experiences of God's graces in their ministries that has opened so many opportunities with various Gospel Artists in and around the U.S. not to mention some secular artist as well.

There was a good turn out and a mighty move of God took place. Congratulations to the Dallas Guild for such a Holy Ghost moving experience. Such artists as the mighty maestro of the organ--Moses Tyson, Jr.
Gaye Arbuckle came through and blessed us with a solo...
Anthony Brown from came by and blessed us with their latest upcoming music...
Various Artist of the gospel affiliation blessed us in Dallas such as Mark Gordon representing Houston Talented group of ministers...

We also take the time to reflect on the 'Relying on God' Conference featuring Dorothy Norwood and Beverly Crawford. This event ministered to more than just women, as stated by Evangelist Bridgette Hill, this conference is not limited to women-men as also included in this event of ministry. Congratulations and God's Blessing to Evangelist Hill. Here are some photos from the conference...
